Arranged

31 Mar

I had to use this photo for this week’s photo challenge.  This was taken outside Cyber Candy, a candy shop in Soho.  They have all sorts of lovely American sweet treats.  It’s the one place in the UK that I’ve been able to find Big Red chewing gum.  For those of those who don’t know, Big Red is a cinnamon-flavoured chewing gum.  It’s readily available in the Philippines but ever since I’ve moved over, I’ve been feeling the withdrawal symptoms because I can’t just pop into a convenience store over here and just buy a pack of them.  I just had to laugh because for those of us who watch the Simpsons, Duff is not an energy drink!

Sunny March!

27 Mar

It’s a quiet but very sunny day.

I’m sitting at the registration desk that we’ve been running since Sunday and I feel sleepy.  To be honest, am probably more tired than sleepy.  It’s  quiet, and there’s a lull in activity.  I would probably give a lot to get the chance to curl up and take a quick (or not-so-quick) nap.

But that’s not possible when your job is to manage these events.  Tomorrow night is going to be a long night!  I always joke about the fact that my job is always in the way of me having a life.  It used to be a joke, albeit prophetic, but now, I think it’s more a statement of fact!

Through

23 Mar

The first thing I thought, even before reading the description for this week’s photo challenge was “ooooh that columned passage at the Queen’s House in Greenwich!”  So without really thinking, this picture was what I decided to post.

Unusual

16 Mar

Taken on my way home tonight.  I think this definitely fits today’s photo challenge bill.  There aren’t a lot of things more unusual than a My Little Pony toy stuck on the railings near the train station!  It’s really Not My Little Pony Sans Friends!

Luxurious oatmeal cookies

12 Mar

I love oatmeal cookies.  I remember late nights with warm cookies and a large glass of milk. Oatmeal cookies are comforting and they remind me of home.  There’s something about the smell of cinnamon wafting from the oven that just brings out the happy hormones.

This recipe is slightly more luxurious because of the amount of butter that is used in the recipe.  But it is definitely worth it.  The cookies are yummy and chewy.  I try to justify it by saying it is oatmeal, and oatmeal IS healthy and good for you!

Oatmeal CookiesIngredients:

  • 270g unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 160g caster sugar
  • 160g soft dark brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 380g plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 200g quick cooking oats
  • 225g raisins

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (360°F).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, oats, salt, bicarbonate of soda and cinnamon together with a balloon whisk until well-combined.  Set aside.
  3. In another mixing bowl, cream butter and sugars together (I use a rubber spatula but you can always use a handheld mixer) until light and fluffy.  Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well and making sure that you scrape the sides of the bowl so that you mix all the ingredients well.
  4. Add the flour-oats mixture to the butter mixture in thirds, mixing well eat time.  Stir in the raisings until evenly distributed.
  5. To make relatively uniform sized cookies, I use a 18/8 gauge ice cream scooper.  If you use the scooper, this makes about 42 cookies.  Arrange the cookie batter scoops on a tray, evenly spaced.
  6. Bake for about 12 minutes, make sure that you check the cookies at the 10 minute mark to make sure they aren’t burning.
  7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly on trays before turning out on wire cooling racks to cool completely.

Contrast

9 Mar

It was hard to find a picture for this week’s photo challenge topic.  But I thought this photo, taken at Hampton Court provided enough on the subject of contrast.  I had forgotten about this photo.  It was interesting to see how bright the blue skies were (although, now that I think about it, it was slightly overcast on the day that we went to visit Hampton Court!) and how dark the castle walls were!

Free treats!

6 Mar

Nope, not a paid advert.  I promise!

Sometimes it’s just nice when you enter a competition for something and you get it.  I love girly things and something nice arrived in the post today.  I entered a competition to get samples of a new line of L’Oreal shampoos and conditioners.  I was a teeny bit jaded about entering competitions like this, because, well, I never win!  But my little package of joy came in the post today.  What girly girl won’t appreciate beauty products, especially free ones?  What was even lovelier was that they sent full-sized samples!

I can’t wait to try them later!
