Birthday schmirthday

15 May

I’ve always enjoyed my birthday.  To some people it might be just another day.  Some people don’t like birthdays because it’s a reminder that they are getting old.  Strangely enough, it was only quite recently that I started feeling slightly ambivalent about celebrating birthdays.  It’s all about getting old and my fear that I have nothing to show for it.  But for all my ambivalence, I love it when people remember my birthday, when my nearest and dearest say “Happy Birthday!” and smile.  I love the reassurance that comes from their greeting, the reassurance that they’re happy I’m on this earth.  It’s a good thing.

A favourite gift this year is an Angry Birds toy.  It’s one of the pigs and when you press his forehead, and it makes the annoying laugh-snort sound that the pigs make when you fail a level.  It makes me smile.

One of my bestest friends in the whole world sent me this poem.  She received it on her birthday last year.  Thank God for wonderful friends.  Thank God because they know exactly what to say to make your heart swell.  Thank God because they know how to give you a hug, even from such a great distance.

“Comfort on difficult days,
smiles when sadness intrudes,
rainbows to follow the clouds,
laughter to kiss your lips,
sunsets to warm your heart,
hugs when spirits sag,
beauty for your eyes to see,
friendships to brighten your being,
faith so that you can believe,
confidence for when you doubt,
courage to know yourself,
patience to accept the truth,
Love to complete your life.”

Thanks Maries.  You totally made my day.
